How we told Ray's dad!

Finally, last but definitely NOT least, we told Ray’s dad. Actually, we mailed Ray’s dad’s package with high hopes we’d time it to be received around July 4th (after he got back from his Canada vacation). I must say that we did a good job with timing!

We will be seeing Ray’s dad in a few months, but that was too long to wait. So, we decided to mail the news to him. But we planned it so that we could hear his reaction! We may have not have planned a face to face presentation for BaBa (what I call Ray’s dad). However, just as much time and care went into planning how he would find out!

Ray’s dad is a very stylish dresser. We knew he would be SO happy about being a Grandpa-to-be, but we didn’t want to cramp his style in any way. So, we decided against anything like a shirt, hat, etc. Instead, Ray came up with getting him something that had to do with him being a grandpa that he wouldn’t have to wear. He suggested giving BaBa something he could bring with him when he comes to see the baby when it is born. He joked that it would be his dad’s “admission ticket” to see the baby! To me, that sounded perfect.

Out we went in search of that perfect something that could serve as a cool admission ticket! It took some looking, but we finally found a VERY hip bib! It is bright, happy, and unisex! What more could we ask for?! We bought it and then went searched for some bright tissue paper to wrap it in.

Ray and I wrapped it with extreme care and attached notes all over it telling BaBa NOT to open it until he called us! We did that because Ray’s dad is like a kid! He never wants to wait until his birthday or Christmas or whatever to open his gifts! He always opens them the day he gets them! :) And we wanted to make absolutely sure he got the message so we wouldn’t miss his reaction!!!

I apologize this picture is sideways...it won't load correctly. But you get the point!

Ray and I had so much fun getting BaBa’s package ready to send off! We were so excited while doing it that we quickly realized how hard it would have to be to wait for him to receive it! Here is a picture of Ray wrapping up the package. Look at his hands. He was moving them real fast…ya know how a person does when they are real excited! When he was doing that, he was telling me how excited his dad is going to be!

Finally, on July 4th, while we were in Houston, we got a phone call from Ray’s dad. He said he got a package and wanted to know what it was. Since he was on speaker and both of us could hear him, we said, “OPEN IT!” He said, “I can’t right now. I’m in my car right now on my way to work. I’ll call you back when I get there.” Kinda disappointed but VERY excited, we said, “Ok”.

When he called him back, we put him on speaker again. We could hear him tearing the package open. It was so exciting! As he opened the outside box, he read the note warning him to make sure we are on the phone. Then when he took the wrapping off the inside gift box, he read the other warning! We were glad he was reading the notes, but we wanted him to just tear that box open! Finally, he opened the gift box and found yet another warning on top of the tissue paper! By this time, Ray and I were beside ourselves with excitement! He opened the box and saw the bib! He was VERY excited! It was so good to hear it in his voice as he found out the news! One thing that made us both laugh is when he said, “I knew it!” We said, “Really? How?!” He said, “I just knew it. The whole way to work I was trying to guess what was in the box…and that was my first guess!!!!”

Here are pictures of Ray talking to his dad. And of course, the next one is of me talking to him about the news!

He asked me how I’m feeling. I thought that was so nice. I must say that so many have been GREAT about asking me that. I really appreciate it. You tend to think that women are so much more aware of how the mom is feeling. But with our family and friends, that is not the case at all. The guys, especially Ray’s dad, have been wonderful about asking me how I am. And on a funnier note, he always asks me if Ray is taking good care of me!

As you all know, Ray and I have had baby names picked out for years. And no one, besides us, will know what name we choose until the baby is born! But we want our baby to have a Chinese nickname. We will probably call it that name pretty often. We wanted no one but Ray’s dad to give him/her their Chinese name! He is super excited about that! And so are we! Of course, if Ray’s dad chooses to reveal his/her name before he/she is born (which we hope), we will definitely share that name with everyone! :)

Congratulations to Dad/BaBa becoming a Grandpa soon!
