Do you remember how I said I think it is funny to show people gross pictures?! Well, here is one!
These are chicken hearts! Ray cooked them in a garlic butter sauce. I ate them with white rice. They were de-licous! And for those of you who are wondering, Ray did not get me to start eating these. I have loved chicken hearts since I was a kid! I guess the thought is kinda unpleasant...but they are SO good! Believe it or not, even Ray doesn't like the thought of eating them. He claims he doesn't like the taste either, but I think it is more of a spiritual thing. I think he has a hang up eating the heart of an animal. And I definitely see his point. But one you eat a chicken heart, you'll never part! Ha! That rhymed! I'm so funny! ;)

Yes, your favorite) Many shopping trips with chicken on the list, you would always want to know if the pkg of chicken contained a heart. We would usually buy a whole chicken to grill because I knew besides maybe eating a chicken leg, you wanted to eat the heart first. Sometimes, to your dismay, the heart would be missing from the pkg and you would be very upset. You also had quite a few pleasant surprises when we opened the pkg of chicken and to our delight-especially yours, hidden in all the chicken parts, there were two hearts just for you! Do you also remember the times I grilled the chicken? I also grilled the heart for you and trying to get it just right- tender, but not burned & in the process, knocked it right through the holes of the grill? My goodness, you were upset! But, thankfully, that did not happen too often. :)
You found another person who loves chicken hearts. I love not just chicken hearts, I love pig hearts, cow hearts, duck hearts. (Go ahead to try. Ask Ray to cook them for you. You will love them.)When we were young, mom loved to cook duck hearts with rice to make watery rice soup for us. Mom said that duck hearts rice soup is especially good for the health of kids. If you could come to Houston in July, I would love to make a bowl of hearts for all of us to tryout. Probably, my kids would scare to death.
You found another person that loves chicken hearts. I love not only chicken hearts. I tried pig, duck, cow hearts, too. When I was small, mom cooked duck hearts with rice to make watery rice duck heart soup for us. It was delicious. Mom believed that this kind of soup is very good to the health of her kids. (Ray, for sure, you ate that when you were small in 12A)We also dehydrated animals' organ to make soup. When you come to Houston, I would love to cook a bowl of hearts for you all to try. I hope my kids won't make a terrible comment on my dish.
Aunt Diana,
I was grossed out by the look and especially the thought of eating an animal's heart. But my father gave me no choice! I had to try chicken livers, gizzards, and hearts. Even if I said I didn't like them, I had to "try it again" each time we had it (to see if my tastes had changed). The result: Chicken livers are just OK - taste much better with ketchup than plain. Gizzards? I hate them. I cannot ever chew them enough. It is like they expand more and more as you chew them! UCK! Hearts, well, you know the result! I tried them and liked them, but there was guilt attached! This is an animal's HEART. Poor baby. But it took no time for the good taste to overrule that guilt I was feeling! I like them fried, sauteed, boiled, baked, stir fried, barbequed - WHATEVER! Other than chicken hearts, I don't really eat anything weird. While I have relatives who eat nutra rat, rabbits, snakes, etc, I have tried NONE of them. I used to know this guy (from Cajun Country) who ate black birds! The only other thing I've eaten is frog legs. Tastes like chicken they say! NO! Not to me! And I cannot get over the thought of eating frogs' most prized body parts! They used those legs to make beautiful leaps! But if you would like to fix me some chicken hearts the next time we come your way, that would be great! I'll try to talk your boys and the little ones into trying them, but I cannot promise I will be successful! ;)
Love,
