a Friday combo blog

On a serious note:

I talked to my dad on the phone tonight. He’s out of the country visiting the place where he plans to be living soon. He seemed to be having a good time. Like most conversations with my dad, tonight’s was humorous, yet also confusing.

To say the least, my dad is quite a character. Of course, I am very familiar with how he is. And in many ways, I’m thankful for how he is. After all, if a person suddenly becomes something unfamiliar, it is difficult to understand. And as weird as it sounds, I think I’m finally making some headway when it comes to understanding him or at least accepting him, which I never thought possible. But on the other hand, I find the way my dad is to be disappointing. I sometimes wish he was more mainstream. Ordinarily, I’d argue that mainstream is boring. But I don’t think having a more mainstream father would be boring. I think it would make me feel safe, comfortable, and confident.

But as my dad says, you are what you’ve always been and you are what you’ll always be. So, I think the best thing I can do is to continue working to accept him for who he is…and who he’ll always be. My never-ending struggle is how to not feel weird describing my dad as both a beautiful spirit and a lost soul. You might wonder how one person can be both. Well, let me just say that if anyone can pull off such, it would be my dad.

Anyway, tomorrow is my dad’s birthday. I bet he’ll be doing some celebrating…and I probably wouldn’t agree with his methods. But he’s old enough to make his own decisions. I’m a big believer in a person making their birthday all about themselves…and I have no doubt he’s carrying through with that one too! Anyway, I really hope he has a good day. He’ll be on my mind tomorrow, just as he is every day.

And in the spirit of Friday, here’s my FUN Friday blog entry:

Last weekend, Ray and I did our big weekly grocery shopping. This is something we have always enjoyed doing together. We make a list before we go. Sometimes we’re able to stick to it, but usually, we think of an extra thing or two we need. Either way, instead of only seeking out the things on our list, we browse up and down every aisle. We have a lot of fun strolling, noticing new products, watching people, etc. And of course, our outing would not be complete if Ray didn’t pick up a HUGE “family reunion size" of some condiment and pretend like he’s going to put it in our basket…with a straight face of course! :)

It is no secret that Ray is the chef at our house. Ray is very talented when it comes to cooking. I, on the other hand, must always use a recipe. I must admit that it usually turns out pretty good, but buying all the necessary ingredients can become quite expensive. Also, following a recipe instead of cooking by heart (like Ray does) takes longer. I have input on what we’ll be eating in the week ahead, but Ray usually puts the menus together. When it comes time for him to shop for meats, I don’t stick around too long. It is freezing over there! So, I usually go browse the cereal aisle (one of my favorites) while he is meat shopping. And there are times when I get hung up in one area (like with fruit…I’m very particular about my fruit, especially bananas!). When this happens, he will go get something else on the list that’s nearby.

Well, while I was picking out baking potatoes, Ray said, “I’m gonna go over here and get the cheese”. He left the cart with me. While I knew my purse was in the buggy, I wasn’t watching it very closely. Instead, I just rested my hand on the handle bar with my head turned so I could find the potatoes I wanted. I guess in the back of my head, I knew I should be paying more attention to my purse, but I didn’t stop potato searching! A minute or so later, I saw someone in the corner of my eye! They approached our cart with confidence. Then, I saw a hand go towards the front of the basket! I jerked around real fast…obviously with a really evil look. It was Ray! He said, “Are you okay?! What’s wrong?!” I said, “I thought you were some idiot trying to steal my purse!!!” He smiled and said, “Oh yeah? What were you going to do?!” I said, “Punch you!!!!”

Ray died laughing, and I couldn’t help but follow! It was so funny! We laughed about that all the way to the checkout!

But it was true! My instinct was to turn around and knock that purse snatcher’s lights out! :) Now I guess the questions is whether that was the ole Tish or the temperamental, pregnant Tish! I’m too embarrassed to answer that! ;)
